GLOBAL CHALLENGE UPDATE

Well, the training is over, the bruises are fading and the swaying is subsiding. After two of the physically most demanding (but, bizarrely, fun!) weeks of my life, the jury has spoken and the verdict is.......that I'm going to the Southern Ocean!! (For photos of the Phase 1 Training on the 67' Challenge yachts off Southampton click here - we'll be racing on slightly different ones that are 72').

I shall be joining the skipper and crew of yacht 'Me to You' on 20th February 2005 in Sydney. There is a busy week of race preparation and parties there before we set sail from Darling Harbour on Sunday 27th February for Leg 4. This leg of the race is from Sydney to Cape Town - a journey of over 6,000 cold, hard, wet miles. This is a magnificent opportunity for me to do something I've wanted to do for several years but I hope that I can also use it to benefit others.

With your help, I am hoping that I can raise at least a pound for every mile that I complete - a target of £6,200, to help Save the Children continue their work around the world and particularly in Asia following the Tsunami. Please, then, dig deep and sponsor me online, at www.justgiving.co.uk/catsleg4, either now or when I arrive in Cape Town in early April.

To meet the crew and watch 'Me to You's progress over the next month or so, track us on www.metoyou.co.uk, and the race as a whole on www.globalchallenge2004.com . Each yacht posts a log and there are general news updates and features posted daily along with the race viewer which shows where all the yachts are on a wee map. You can take a virtual tour of the living accommodation and messages can be posted on the site on a letters page that we will pick up when we get to Cape Town. All being well, that should be early April. Other post or messages can be sent to the addresses below.

So, in the meantime I am frantically trying to get everything organised before heading off on 13th February. Thanks so much to all those who have been telling me I'm mad, but to go for it anyway. Please forgive me if I don't manage to see you before I go, but please do watch the race and post messages - I believe some may get through to us while we are at sea and by all accounts it helps to know that there is life out there when we are damp and tired in the middle of the ocean!
